Thanksgiving
Ben Scott’s sister Susan is in the USA for a year. Here’s her letter home about Thanksgiving (Erntedankfest) in America.

Shorewood, Wisconsin
30th November

Dear Mum, Dad, Grandma and Ben,
Sorry! I didn’t write you a letter last week, but Thursday was Thanksgiving – a very special day here. It’s always on the fourth Thursday in November and it’s the most important holiday for families in America. They all come together and there are lots of special things to see… and to eat!

Do you know the story of Thanksgiving? I didn’t. Brian told us one story at breakfast. When some of the first English colonists ( Siedler ) came to America, to what is now Massachussetts, they had no food. Guess who helped them? The Indians. They grew ( grow – grew = anbauen ) lots of food and they showed the colonists what they had to do. That year the colonists had a fantastic harvest ( Ernte ). So they invited the Indians and they celebrated a “thanksgiving” with them. A great story, I thought. But then I watched something on TV about Indians and Thanksgiving, too. Indians say the English colonists took their land and destroyed ( zerstörten ) their way of life (Lebensart, Kultur).

So a lot of them don’t celebrate Thanksgiving. But most Americans still celebrate – and it’s good fun! In the morning we watched a great parade on TV – it was in New York. The floats ( Festwagen ) and the costumes were fantastic. In the afternoon the kids and I watched TV again. There’s always a big football match at Thanksgiving – American football, of course!
Brian and Carol prepared a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. It really was a special day.

Lots of love,
Susan

Text production

Harry Potter and Ron Weasley are on holiday. Harry must spend four weeks with his terrible relatives.
Then he can visit Ron’s family.
They often write letters and Harry’s owl ( Eule ) Hedwig transports them.

Write two of these letters.

Ron’s letter.
Ron bemitleidet Harry und will wissen, was er so macht. Er fragt ihn auch, ob es schwierig ist, dass er
keine Zauberei benutzen darf.

Now write Harry’s letter in which he first answers Ron. Then
- tell Ron about pne funny thing that happened to his terrible cousin,
- ask one question,
- write about something he is looking forward to at the Weasleys’.
